Strength Members
Strength members provide structural support to the cable, preventing stretching, crushing, or breaking during installation and use. They can be made of aramid fibers (like Kevlar), fiberglass, or steel rods, and are typically laid parallel to the fiber to maintain flexibility while enhancing durability .
Outer Jacket
The jacket is the outermost layer that shields the cable from environmental hazards such as moisture, UV exposure, fire, and mechanical damage. Jacket materials vary depending on the application and may include PVC, LSZH (low-smoke zero-halogen), or other polymers . The jacket also helps comply with building codes and installation standards.
Additional Considerations
For specialized applications, fiber optic cables may include armored layers for outdoor use, water-blocking materials, or multiple fibers bundled together in ribbons.
