Article Overview

To connect a fiber optic distribution box to your home, mount the box, route and prepare the fiber cables, splice or terminate them, and link the fiber to an ONT inside your home.

Step 1: Mount the Fiber Distribution Box

Choose a suitable location for the box, either indoor or outdoor, depending on the model. Outdoor boxes should be weatherproof and UV-resistant. Mount the box 3–5 feet above the ground for easy access, using anchors or lag bolts for wall mounting, or metal bands for pole mounting. Ensure the box is level and stable before securing it fully .

Step 2: Route the Fiber Cable

Feed the incoming fiber drop from the service provider through the box's entry port. Leave a 10–15 cm service loop inside the box to prevent stress on the fiber. If connecting to an indoor ONT, route a second fiber cable through another port, leaving a second service loop .

Step 3: Prepare the Fiber

Carefully strip the outer jacket, buffer, and coating from the fiber using a fiber stripper. Make a clean, perpendicular cut with a fiber cleaver and clean the ends with 99% isopropyl alcohol and lint-free wipes to remove dust and debris .

Step 4: Splice or Terminate the Fiber

  • Mechanical splicing: Insert the cleaved fiber ends into a mechanical splice and lock it, then place it in the splice tray.
  • Fusion splicing: Use a fusion splicer to join the fibers, add a heat-shrink protector, and place the splice in the tray.
  • Connect pigtail connectors to the box adapters and label each port for easy identification .

Step 5: Organize and Close the Box

Arrange the fibers to avoid tight bends (minimum 30 mm bend radius), trim excess cable ties, and close the box cover to protect the fibers from dust, moisture, and physical damage .

Step 6: Connect to the ONT

Inside your home, connect the fiber from the distribution box to the Optical Network Terminal (ONT). The ONT converts light signals into electrical signals for your router. Then, link the ONT to your router or gateway using an Ethernet cable. Power on the ONT and test the connection to ensure proper signal levels and internet functionality .

Step 7: Test the Connection

Use a fiber power meter to check signal strength, typically ranging from -7 dBm to -28 dBm for standard single-mode FTTH fiber. Confirm that the ONT and router are receiving a stable signal before finalizing the installation . By following these steps, you can safely and effectively connect a fiber optic distribution box to your home, ensuring high-speed, reliable internet service.
