Article Overview

Wiring an electro-optical converter involves connecting the RF input to the modulator, powering the module correctly, and coupling the optical output to a fiber while ensuring proper polarization and isolation.

Step 1: Inspect and Prepare the Module

Before wiring, inspect the module for shipping damage and verify that all components are included, such as the laser source, Mach-Zehnder modulator, and automatic bias controller (for MN4775A series) or equivalent components in your module . Ensure you have the correct fiber connectors (typically PM FC/PC or FC/APC) and that the optical fiber is clean and properly terminated .

Step 2: Connect the Electrical Input

  • Identify the RF input port on the module. This is where your electrical signal source will connect.
  • For high-performance modules, the RF signal modulates the laser diode or Mach-Zehnder modulator directly, so ensure the input signal matches the required voltage and frequency specifications .
  • If using an optocoupler-based E/O module (like PC817), connect the input pin to your signal source and the input GND to the source ground. The input is typically active LOW, meaning the LED inside the module emits light when the input is pulled LOW .

Step 3: Power the Module

  • Connect the module's VCC and GND pins to the appropriate power supply. For isolation modules, the input-side and output-side power domains are separate; do not connect them together .
  • Some modules include jumpers or solder bridges to enable on-board pull-up resistors on the output side. Configure these according to your system requirements.

Step 4: Connect the Optical Output

  • Couple the optical output to a single-mode fiber using the provided connector (FC/PC or FC/APC). Ensure the fiber is aligned with the polarization axis if using polarization-maintaining fiber .
  • For modules with internal lasers, select the desired wavelength (fixed or tunable) and ensure the laser is properly stabilized. For modules requiring an external laser, connect the laser to the Laser In port and verify the wavelength compatibility (typically 1250–1610 nm for MN4775A series), .

Step 5: Verify Operation

  • Power on the module and check that the laser or LED is emitting light.
  • Use a photodiode or optical power meter to confirm optical output.
  • For high-speed modules, ensure the bias controller is active to maintain the laser at its quiescent point for low-noise operation .
  • If using remote control, connect via RS-232 or USB and configure using SCPI commands or the module's GUI .

Step 6: Safety and Signal Integrity

  • Avoid bending the fiber sharply to prevent signal loss.
  • Keep input and output grounds isolated if using optocoupler modules.
  • Ensure the optical power does not exceed the maximum rating of the fiber or receiver. By following these steps, your electro-optical converter module will be correctly wired, powered, and ready for reliable signal conversion from electrical to optical domains .
