Article Overview

The installation of a 4-core fiber optic terminal box involves mounting, cable preparation, splicing pigtails, routing fibers, securing slack, labeling, and final testing to ensure reliable connections.

Step-by-Step Installation

1. Mounting the Terminal Box Install the terminal box on a wall, rack, or designated surface, ensuring the front panel is easily accessible and the cable entry is at the bottom for proper routing . For indoor or outdoor use, select a location that allows maintenance access and protects the fibers from environmental stress. 2. Prepare the Fiber Cable Feed the incoming 4-core fiber cable into the box, leaving 15–20 cm of slack inside . Secure the cable with clamps or brackets. Strip the outer jacket carefully, exposing the strength members and individual fibers according to the cable design. Clean the fibers with lint-free wipes and 99% isopropyl alcohol to remove contaminants . 3. Install Adapters and Pigtails Insert SC or LC adapters into the front panel of the box. Slide heat-shrink splice protection sleeves onto the pigtails before splicing . Identify each pigtail using standard TIA/EIA 598 fiber color codes (Blue, Orange, Green, Brown) to match the feeder fibers. 4. Pre-route Fibers Route both the feeder fibers and pigtails into the splice tray before splicing. This ensures proper fiber lengths, avoids tight bends, and allows for organized cable management . Position the future splice protector location and trim fibers accordingly. 5. Fusion Splicing Perform fusion splicing between the feeder fibers and pigtails using a calibrated fusion splicer. Ensure low-loss splices and avoid microbending. After splicing, slide the heat-shrink sleeve over the splice and shrink it with a heat source . 6. Fiber Routing and Slack Management Place the spliced fibers into the splice tray, securing them without excessive bending. Store any extra fiber in the designated loops or storage area inside the box to prevent stress and maintain minimum bend radius . 7. Labeling Label each fiber and port clearly to correspond with the feeder cable and pigtail numbers. Proper labeling prevents future service errors and simplifies maintenance . 8. Testing and Verification Use an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) or power meter to verify splice quality and overall optical performance. Confirm that all fibers meet the required insertion loss and continuity standards . 9. Close and Secure the Box Once all fibers are spliced, routed, and tested, close the terminal box securely. Ensure the cover is properly sealed to protect fibers from dust, moisture, and mechanical damage . Following this sequence ensures a reliable, maintainable, and high-performance fiber optic termination for FTTH or LAN deployments.
