Article Overview
Fiber optic splicing involves precisely joining two fiber cables using either mechanical alignment or fusion welding to ensure minimal signal loss.
1. Prepare Your Tools and Workspace
Before starting, ensure all splicing tools are clean and properly maintained, including the fiber cleaver, splicer, and cleaning materials. Select the appropriate fiber holder for the cable type (e.g., 250-µm or 900-µm fibers) and ensure the splicing machine is calibrated for the fiber type you are using .
2. Strip the Fiber
Remove the protective coatings, jackets, tubes, and strength members from the fiber to expose the bare glass core. This step is critical for both mechanical and fusion splicing . Clean the exposed fiber thoroughly to remove any dust or debris.
3. Cleave the Fiber
Use a fiber cleaver to score and break the fiber at a 90° angle. A clean, perpendicular cut ensures proper alignment and minimal signal loss . Inspect the cleaved ends for smoothness and accuracy.
4. Align the Fibers
- Mechanical Splicing: Place the fibers into a mechanical splice unit or sleeve. Use an index-matching gel or epoxy to align the fiber cores precisely, allowing light to pass through with minimal reflection .
- Fusion Splicing: Insert the fibers into the fusion splicer. The machine automatically aligns the fibers using precision electrodes and prepares them for welding .
5. Splice the Fibers
- Mechanical Splice: The gel or epoxy holds the fibers in place, creating a temporary or semi-permanent connection. No heat is required .
- Fusion Splice: The splicer generates an electric arc to melt and fuse the fiber ends together, forming a permanent, low-loss joint .
6. Test the Splice
Verify the quality of the splice using an insertion loss meter or OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer) to ensure minimal signal loss and proper alignment .
7. Protect the Splice
Apply a crimp or heat-shrink splice protection sleeve to safeguard the fiber. Place the spliced fiber into a splice tray or closure, ensuring proper tension and avoiding sharp bends . Seal the closure to prevent moisture damage.
8. Final Inspection
Check the splice for proper alignment, protection, and signal integrity. Ensure the fiber is straight, tensioned, and securely housed in the splice tray or closure . By following these steps, technicians can achieve reliable, low-loss fiber optic connections suitable for long-haul networks, data centers, or repair applications.
