Article Overview

Central communication optical cables are specialized fiber optic cables designed for high-density, high-performance connectivity in central offices, headends, and other network hubs.

Overview

Central communication optical cables are used to connect and manage data traffic within central offices, headends, mobile switching centers, and data centers. They are critical for supporting high-speed broadband, telecom, and cable networks, enabling efficient transmission of voice, video, and data signals over long distances with minimal loss or interference .

Structure and Composition

A typical central communication optical cable consists of several key components :

  • Cable Core: Located at the center, it houses the optical fibers and maintains their alignment to ensure optimal signal transmission. Core designs include layer-twisted, skeleton (trough), belt, and central beam tube types. Central strengthening cores are often used in Europe and Japan, while reinforcement on the outer sheath is common in the United States.
  • Optical Fibers: Usually 250 µm fibers, available in counts from 2 to 24 or more, depending on network requirements. These fibers can be single-mode or multi-mode.
  • Strength Members: Materials such as aramid yarn, steel wire, or fiberglass rods provide tensile strength to protect fibers from mechanical stress.
  • Sheath: The outer protective layer, often consisting of an inner and outer sheath, made from materials like LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen), plenum, or riser-rated compounds for indoor/outdoor use.
  • Armor Options: For additional protection, cables may include aluminum interlocked, steel wire, or corrugated steel tape armor, enhancing crush resistance and suitability for direct burial or aerial deployment .

Types and Applications

  • Central Loose Tube Fiber Cables: Designed for indoor/outdoor use, including conduit, direct burial, aerial, and trunking applications. They facilitate mass fusion splicing and are available in gel or gel-free constructions .
  • Indoor/Outdoor Ratings: Cables can be plenum-rated for air-handling spaces, riser-rated for vertical runs, or LSZH for low-toxicity environments.
  • Deployment Environments: Central communication optical cables are used in central offices, headends, FTTx cabinets, Points of Presence (POP), and mobile switching centers, supporting high-density connections and evolving network architectures like leaf-spine topologies and parallel optics .

Advantages

  • High Bandwidth and Low Loss: Supports data rates exceeding 100 Gbps with minimal insertion loss and reflectance.
  • Durability: Reinforced cores and armored designs protect against mechanical stress, environmental factors, and electromagnetic interference.
  • Flexibility: Suitable for a variety of network architectures, including centralized radio access networks (C-RAN) and hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) systems.
  • Ease of Installation: Preterminated assemblies and modular designs reduce labor and installation time, improving operational efficiency . Central communication optical cables are essential for modern telecommunications infrastructure, providing reliable, high-capacity connections that support the growing demand for broadband, cloud services, and 5G networks.
