Article Overview

Optical fibers are classified based on mode of propagation, refractive index profile, material, application, light transmission path, and flexibility.

1. Based on Mode of Propagation

  • Single-Mode Fiber (SMF): Transmits a single light ray or mode, ideal for long-distance communication such as telecommunication and internet services. It has a thin core of about 8–10 micrometers for precise light transmission .
  • Multi-Mode Fiber (MMF): Carries multiple light rays simultaneously, suitable for short-distance communication like LANs. It has a larger core of 50–62.5 micrometers .

2. Based on Refractive Index Profile

  • Step-Index Fiber: Core has a uniform refractive index with a sharp change at the core-cladding boundary. Used in simple, low-cost systems .
  • Graded-Index Fiber: Refractive index decreases gradually from the center to the edge, reducing dispersion and improving signal clarity. Suitable for medium-range communication .

3. Based on Material

  • Glass (Silica) Fiber: Core and cladding made of silica, offering high optical clarity and low signal loss. Widely used in high-speed networks and medical imaging .
  • Plastic Optical Fiber (POF): Core and cladding made of plastic, more flexible and cheaper than glass fibers. Common in decorative lighting and short-range communication .

4. Based on Application

  • Telecommunication Fibers: Used in internet cables, telephone lines, and cable TV .
  • Specialized Fibers: Used in sensors, medical imaging (endoscopy), fiber lasers, and industrial applications .

5. Based on Light Transmission Path

  • Conventional Fiber: Light travels through continuous reflection within the core, widely used in communication .
  • Photonic Crystal Fiber: Uses tiny air holes in the core to guide light, providing unique properties like super-high speed and precision .

6. Based on Flexibility

  • Rigid Fibers: Do not bend easily, used in fixed installations .
  • Flexible Fibers: Highly bendable, ideal for medical imaging, robotics, and other dynamic applications .

Importance of Classification

Classifying optical fibers helps in tailoring their use, optimizing cost efficiency, and ensuring high performance for specific applications. This enables effective deployment in telecommunications, internet infrastructure, medical imaging, and industrial sensing systems .
