Article Overview
Fibre optic cable break detectors, such as Visual Fault Locators (VFLs) and live fiber detectors, identify breaks, bends, or faults in fiber optic cables using visible or near-infrared light.
Types of Detectors
Visual Fault Locators (VFLs): VFLs emit a bright red laser light (typically around 650 nm) into the fiber optic cable. The light travels through the fiber and leaks out at points of breaks, severe bends, or poor splices, making faults visible to the technician. VFLs are handheld, battery-powered, and effective for short distances, usually up to a few kilometers, making them ideal for indoor or patch cable troubleshooting (Trend Networks VFF5, GAO Tek) . Live Fiber Detectors: Devices like the Fluke FiberLert detect near-infrared light emitted from active fiber optic cables without requiring disconnection. They provide both visual (LED glow) and audible signals to indicate the presence of light, allowing technicians to verify fiber activity, polarity, and connectivity safely and quickly .
How They Work
- Connection: The detector is connected to one end of the fiber or held near the fiber for non-contact detection.
- Light Emission: VFLs send visible red light through the fiber, while live detectors sense existing light in active fibers.
- Fault Identification: Leaks or absence of light indicate breaks, bends, or misaligned splices. In VFLs, the fault appears as a glowing or blinking red spot along the fiber .
- Inspection: Technicians trace the fiber visually to locate the exact fault point. For longer cables, an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) may be used in conjunction to pinpoint faults over extended distances .
Applications
- Troubleshooting and Maintenance: Quickly locate breaks, bends, or damaged connectors in fiber networks.
- Installation Verification: Ensure continuity and proper alignment during fiber optic cable installation.
- Connector and Splice Testing: Detect misalignments or poor mechanical splices by observing light leakage.
- Network Safety: Live fiber detectors allow safe verification of active fibers without disconnecting equipment .
Advantages
- Cost-effective and portable: Handheld devices are affordable and easy to carry.
- Immediate visual feedback: Faults are visible without complex equipment.
- No need for equipment at the far end: VFLs work independently, simplifying testing . Fibre optic cable break detectors are essential tools for technicians, providing fast, reliable, and safe methods to identify and locate faults in fiber optic networks.
