Article Overview
Proper preparation of fiber optic cable involves careful stripping, cleaning, and cleaving to ensure low-loss splicing or connectorization.
Overview
Preparing a fiber optic cable is a critical step before connectorization or splicing. The process ensures a continuous light path and minimizes signal loss. It involves more than removing the outer jacket; each step must be executed with precision using specialized tools while following safety precautions .
Tools Required
- Sheath knife or utility knife with hook blade
- Fiber strippers (appropriate for the fiber diameter)
- Side cutters or diagonal pliers
- Measuring tape
- Vinyl or friction tape
- Gloves and safety glasses
- Polishing tools for connectors
- Swivel or ball-bearing type tools for pulling grips
- Hex wrench and scissors
Step-by-Step Preparation
1. Cable Handling and Safety
- Always wear safety glasses to protect eyes from fiber shards.
- Handle fibers carefully; small glass fragments can cause injury.
- Dispose of fiber scraps in designated containers .
2. Outer Jacket Removal
- Use a sheath knife to cut the outer jacket at the designated distance.
- Flex the cable at the ring cut to separate and remove the jacket.
- Remove no more than 8 inches at a time to avoid damaging internal fibers .
3. Simplex and Duplex Cable Preparation
- For zip-cord duplex cables, cut the connecting membrane about 1 inch and gently separate the two simplex fibers.
- Prepare each simplex cable according to the connector or splice specifications .
4. Fiber Stripping and Cleaning
- Strip the tight-buffered fiber using appropriate strippers without nicking the fiber.
- Clean the bare fiber with lint-free wipes and isopropyl alcohol to remove any residue .
5. Cleaving
- Use a precision cleaver to create a flat, perpendicular end face on the fiber.
- A proper cleave is essential for low-loss fusion or mechanical splicing .
6. Connectorization or Splicing
- For mechanical splicing, align fibers in a splice holder and secure.
- For fusion splicing, use a fusion splicer to melt and join fibers, ensuring minimal signal loss .
- Follow manufacturer guidelines for connector insertion and polishing to achieve optimal performance .
Best Practices
- Follow manufacturer and local guidelines for sheath removal lengths and tensile load limits.
- Avoid excessive bending, pulling, or crushing of the cable.
- Record cable identification markings for future reference.
- Use well-reviewed, industry-standard tools to ensure consistent results . By carefully following these steps, fiber optic cables can be prepared for high-quality, reliable connections, whether for new installations, maintenance, or network expansion .
