Article Overview

Indoor optical cables are manufactured through a precise multi-step process involving fiber drawing, coating, cabling, strength reinforcement, jacketing, and rigorous testing to ensure safety and performance.

1. Raw Material Preparation

The process begins with ultra-pure silica (SiO₂) derived from silicon tetrachloride, sometimes combined with germanium dioxide (GeO₂) to form the fiber core that guides light efficiently . These materials are carefully purified to minimize signal loss and ensure high-quality transmission.

2. Preform Fabrication

The purified silica is converted into a glass preform, a solid rod with a core and cladding structure. Techniques like Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition (MCVD) deposit layers inside a hollow silica tube, controlling the refractive index to guide light effectively .

3. Fiber Drawing

The preform is heated to approximately 2,000°C until molten, and a thin fiber is drawn downwards. The diameter is precisely maintained at 125 microns, with minimal variation, ensuring uniform optical properties . Immediately after drawing, the fiber passes through coating cups where dual-layer protective acrylate coatings are applied and cured with UV light to prevent moisture and mechanical damage .

4. Proofing and Testing

Each fiber undergoes proof testing for tensile strength and optical performance tests such as attenuation measurement using OTDR. Geometrical checks ensure correct diameter, concentricity, and coating thickness .

5. Cabling and Strength Members

For indoor cables, multiple fibers are stranded or bundled around a central strength member, often made of fiberglass or aramid yarn (Kevlar), providing tensile strength and preventing stretching . Fibers may be housed in tight-buffered designs or small tubes, sometimes filled with water-blocking materials for added protection .

6. Jacketing

Indoor optical cables typically use Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) jackets to reduce toxic smoke in case of fire. The jacket protects the fibers from environmental hazards and facilitates safe handling during installation .

7. Final Testing and Spooling

The completed cable undergoes mechanical tests (crush, impact, flexibility), environmental tests (temperature cycling, moisture resistance), and attenuation checks. Once approved, the cable is wound onto spools for distribution .

Key Considerations for Indoor Cables

  • Flame and smoke resistance: LSZH materials are essential for indoor safety.
  • Flexibility: Indoor cables must bend easily around corners without damaging fibers.
  • Compact design: Tight-buffered or ribbon configurations allow easier routing in buildings . This meticulous process ensures that indoor optical cables provide high-speed, reliable data transmission while meeting safety standards for building installations.
