Bangladesh is advancing its fiber broadband infrastructure with high-capacity optical networks, positioning itself to adopt next-generation 200G ONT technology.

Bangladesh's leading government-owned telecom operator, BTCL, is constructing a high-capacity optical fiber transmission network to distribute high-speed internet from the SMW-5 undersea submarine cable to key locations across the country, using advanced DWDM optical transmission equipment and Optical Line Amplifiers to ensure optimal bandwidth allocation and network resilience during traffic fluctuations (Tejas Networks) . This network is designed to be scalable, self-healing, and capable of supporting a wide range of service granularities, from 64 kbps to nx10GE . Optical Network Terminals (ONTs), also known as Optical Network Units (ONUs), are critical devices in fiber networks that convert optical signals into usable internet, voice, and video services for homes and businesses. In Bangladesh, ONTs are increasingly deployed to support GPON and XGS-PON networks, providing multi-gigabit connectivity with features like Wi-Fi, multiple Ethernet ports, and Quality of Service (QoS) prioritization . Globally, 200G PON technology has been demonstrated, offering data rates up to 200 Gbps per fiber, enabling multi-gigabit services for households, enterprises, and smart city applications. This technology allows a seamless upgrade path from existing GPON, XGS-PON, and 50G PON deployments, providing future-proof scalability for high-demand applications such as AI, video streaming, and 5G transport . While Bangladesh has not yet officially launched 200G ONTs, the ongoing deployment of high-capacity optical backbones and modular, scalable ONT platforms like Tejas TJ2100N positions the country to adopt next-generation 200G ONT solutions with minimal disruption to existing fiber infrastructure .
