  • Distance relays: Trip based on impedance measured along a line.
  • Differential relays: Detect differences between input and output currents to protect transformers, generators, or busbars.
  • Voltage or frequency relays: Respond to abnormal voltage or frequency conditions .

Operating Principles

Protective relays operate by monitoring electrical quantities (current, voltage, or impedance) and comparing them to preset pickup and reset levels. When the actuating quantity exceeds the pickup threshold, the relay closes its contacts, completing the trip circuit of a breaker. The operating time is the interval from detection to breaker actuation, which can be a few milliseconds for fast-acting relays .
