Article Overview

Fiber optic communication transmits information as light pulses through optical fibers using total internal reflection, converting electrical signals to optical signals at the transmitter and back at the receiver.

Working Principle

Fiber optic communication relies on transmitting data as light pulses through an optical fiber. The key principle is total internal reflection, which occurs when light traveling in a medium with a higher refractive index (core) hits the interface with a lower refractive index medium (cladding) at an angle greater than the critical angle, causing the light to reflect entirely within the core . This allows light to travel long distances with minimal loss. The process involves:

  1. Signal Conversion: Electrical signals (analog or digital) are converted into optical signals using a light source such as a LED or laser diode. Analog signals are first digitized using a coder .
  2. Transmission: Light pulses propagate through the optical fiber, guided by total internal reflection.
  3. Reception: A photodetector (photodiode) receives the light pulses and converts them back into electrical signals.
  4. Signal Processing: The received signal is amplified and decoded to retrieve the original information, whether digital or analog .

Structure / Block Diagram

A typical fiber optic communication system consists of the following components:

  • Message Source: Generates the original information signal.
  • Transducer: Converts the message into an electrical signal suitable for transmission.
  • Modulator: Imposes the information onto a carrier wave and formats the signal.
  • Light Source (LED/Laser Diode): Converts the electrical signal into optical pulses.
  • Optical Fiber (Channel): Guides the light from transmitter to receiver using total internal reflection.
  • Couplers/Repeaters: Boost signal strength over long distances.
  • Photodetector: Converts received light pulses back into electrical signals.
  • Signal Processing Unit: Amplifies, filters, and decodes the signal to recover the original message .

Types of Optical Fibers

  • Single-mode fiber: Small core (7–10 µm), allows one light path, suitable for long-distance, high-bandwidth communication.
  • Multimode fiber: Larger core (20–100 µm), multiple light paths, suitable for medium-distance, high-bandwidth applications .

Advantages

  • High bandwidth and data rate
  • Immunity to electromagnetic interference
  • Long-distance transmission with low loss
  • Lightweight and corrosion-resistant compared to copper cables This combination of principle, structure, and components enables fiber optic communication to efficiently transmit voice, video, and data over long distances with high reliability.
