Overview
Aerial optical cables are fiber optic cables installed above ground, suspended between utility poles, towers, or other supporting structures. They are widely used in telecommunications, FTTx networks, rural broadband, and power grid communications due to their lower cost, faster deployment, and adaptability to complex terrains compared to underground cables . These cables must withstand environmental stresses such as wind, ice, UV radiation, extreme temperatures, and mechanical tension while maintaining stable optical signal transmission .
Main Types
1. Self-Supporting Cables
Self-supporting cables are designed to carry their own weight without requiring a separate messenger wire. They are ideal for long spans between poles or towers. Common subtypes include:
- ADSS (All Dielectric Self-Supporting Cable): Made entirely of non-metallic materials, ADSS cables are electrically insulated, making them suitable for installation near high-voltage power lines. They are lightweight, durable, and resistant to electromagnetic interference and lightning strikes .
- Figure 8 Cable: Named for its cross-sectional shape, this cable integrates a messenger wire and optical fibers in parallel. It provides high tensile strength, water resistance, and UV protection. Variants include GYTC8S, GYXTC8Y, and GYXTC8S, differing in fiber protection and mechanical strength .
- OPGW (Optical Ground Wire): An all-metal cable that combines grounding and optical fiber transmission, commonly used in power transmission lines. It protects fibers inside a metallic sheath while serving as a grounding conductor .
2. Catenary Cables
Catenary cables are suspended on a pre-existing support wire (messenger wire) and rely on it for mechanical support. They are suitable for areas where a support structure already exists, reducing installation complexity and cost .
Construction Features
- Loose Tube Design: Fibers are housed in buffer tubes, often 12 or 24 fibers per tube, providing flexibility and protection against mechanical stress .
- Ribbon Fiber Design: High-density flat ribbons allow mass-fusion splicing, enabling faster installation and restoration .
- Durability: Outdoor aerial cables are designed to resist moisture, UV radiation, and mechanical stress, ensuring long-term performance in harsh environments .
