Step 2: Route Fibers Inside the Box

Guide the fibers through the plastic fiber guide posts or transport tubes inside the terminal box. This ensures that the fibers maintain the minimum bend radius and are organized for easy access . Excess fiber length should be coiled neatly in the splice tray without crossing or tangling other fibers.

Step 3: Splice Fibers to Pigtails

Use a fusion splicing machine to connect the incoming fiber cores to the pre-terminated pigtails. This step is critical for maintaining low signal loss and proper alignment . After splicing, place the fibers in the splice tray cassettes to protect them.

Step 4: Connect Patch Cables

Select patch cables that match the connector types in the terminal box (e.g., SC-SC, FC-FC, SC-FC). Keep the extra length of patch cables within 50 cm to avoid clutter and maintain proper bend radius . Only one fiber jumper should be used between two adapters, and the radius of curvature should exceed 400 mm.

Step 5: Labeling

Label both ends of each patch cable clearly, including the optical path name, code, and barcode. Labels should be machine-printed and uniformly oriented to facilitate maintenance and troubleshooting . Proper labeling ensures that any future changes or maintenance can be accurately tracked.

Step 6: Test the Optical Path

After patching, test each fiber segment using an optical power meter at 1490 nm wavelength. The power should be less than -22 dB at the splitter exit and less than -23 dB at the user end. If no light is detected, use a visible light source to check for misconnections .

Step 7: Final Organization and Documentation

Secure all fibers and patch cables in the box, ensuring no tangling or excessive bending. Record any changes to the optical path and update the relevant maintenance documentation . This ensures the network remains organized and future maintenance is simplified. By following these steps, you can safely and effectively patch a fiber optic terminal box while maintaining signal integrity and proper cable management.
