Article Overview
A laser diode generates coherent, monochromatic light through stimulated emission in a forward-biased semiconductor p-n junction, amplified within an optical cavity.
Basic Principle
A laser diode operates on the principle of stimulated emission, where electrons recombine with holes in a semiconductor material, releasing photons of a specific wavelength . Unlike LEDs, which emit incoherent light, laser diodes produce coherent, monochromatic, and highly directional light . The process begins when a forward voltage is applied across the p-n junction, causing electrons from the n-type region to move into the p-type region and recombine with holes, releasing energy as photons .
Structure and Active Region
The core of a laser diode is the p-n junction, often made from direct bandgap semiconductors such as gallium arsenide (GaAs) or indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs) . Within this junction lies the active region, a thin layer where recombination occurs and light amplification takes place. This region is sometimes called the enhancement medium because it supports stimulated emission, where incoming photons trigger the emission of additional photons with the same phase, frequency, and direction .
Optical Cavity and Mirrors
At each end of the active region, the laser diode has mirrors forming an optical cavity. One mirror is fully reflective, and the other is partially reflective, allowing some light to exit as the laser beam . Photons bounce back and forth between these mirrors, stimulating further emissions and amplifying the light. This resonant cavity ensures that only photons of a specific wavelength and phase are amplified, producing a coherent beam .
Population Inversion and Threshold
For lasing to occur, the diode must achieve population inversion, where more electrons occupy the excited state than the ground state . When the injected current exceeds a threshold value, the rate of stimulated emission surpasses losses, and a cascade of photon emissions generates a concentrated laser beam . The output is highly directional, monochromatic, and coherent, making it suitable for applications like fiber-optic communication, barcode scanning, and medical devices .
Electrical-to-Optical Conversion
Laser diodes are highly efficient, converting a significant portion of electrical energy into optical energy. Typical electrical-to-optical efficiency ranges from 50% to 80% under ideal conditions . Some laser diodes include a monitor photodiode for feedback control, which stabilizes the output by adjusting the drive current to prevent overcurrent and maintain consistent intensity .
Summary
In essence, a laser diode works by:
- Forward-biasing a p-n junction to inject electrons and holes.
- Recombination in the active region producing photons.
- Stimulated emission amplifying photons within an optical cavity.
- Emission of a coherent, monochromatic, and directional laser beam through the partially reflective mirror. This combination of semiconductor physics, optical feedback, and stimulated emission enables laser diodes to serve as compact, efficient, and precise light sources for a wide range of technological applications .
