  2. Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers (SOAs)
    • Gain Medium: Uses a semiconductor material, similar in structure to a Fabry–Perot laser diode but with anti-reflection coatings .
    • Amplification Mechanism: Electrons are injected into the conduction band via an applied current, and the input optical signal stimulates electron-hole recombination to produce amplified light .
    • Characteristics: Compact, electrically pumped, and capable of broad wavelength operation (400–2000 nm), but generally higher noise and lower gain compared to EDFAs .
    • Applications: Integrated optical circuits, short-distance amplification, and compact optical systems.
