Article Overview
Pulsed light can be measured using an optical power or energy meter by capturing the pulse energy and calculating the average or peak power based on pulse width and repetition rate.
Choosing the Right Sensor
For pulsed light, photodiode sensors are suitable for low-power, high-speed pulses, while pyroelectric energy sensors are ideal for higher-energy pulses and lower repetition rates . Pyroelectric sensors can measure pulse energies in the µJ to J range and handle repetition rates from tens of Hz up to several kHz depending on the sensor and load resistor configuration . High-speed photodiodes in photoconductive mode can also be used for fast pulses, as reverse biasing reduces response time .
Measurement Procedure
- Connect the Sensor to the Power Meter: Ensure the sensor is compatible with your power meter console and that the wavelength responsivity is correctly set .
- Expose the Sensor to the Pulsed Light: Align the beam to the sensor head. For high-energy pulses, use appropriate attenuators to prevent sensor damage .
- Measure Pulse Energy: Energy sensors capture the total energy per pulse. For example, if a pulse delivers 5000 J over 0.5 s, the peak power is calculated as 5000 J ÷ 0.5 s = 10,000 W .
- Calculate Average Power: If the pulse train has a known repetition rate and duty cycle, the average power can be estimated as average power = pulse energy × repetition rate .
- Adjust Meter Settings: For low repetition rates or very short pulses, increase the sensor sensitivity and slow the detection circuit response to ensure accurate capture of individual pulses .
Practical Considerations
- Pulse Width and Repetition Rate: Ensure the sensor can respond fast enough to the pulse width and handle the repetition rate without saturation .
- Duty Cycle: For pulsed light with a low duty cycle, the measured average power will be lower than the peak power. Use the formula average power = peak power × duty ratio to correct for this .
- Sensor Saturation: Avoid exceeding the maximum energy density of the sensor to prevent damage. Use neutral density filters or beam splitters if necessary .
- Calibration: Verify the sensor calibration for the specific wavelength and pulse characteristics to ensure accurate readings . By selecting the appropriate sensor, aligning the beam correctly, and accounting for pulse width, repetition rate, and duty cycle, pulsed light can be accurately measured using a power meter or energy sensor.
