Protective Relays

They must match the system's nominal voltage, current rating, and breaking capacity. Circuit breakers can be operated manually or automatically and are controlled by protective relays through trip coils. Types include bulk oil, minimum oil, SF6, airblast, and vacuum breakers, with various operating mechanisms such as solenoid, spring, pneumatic, or hydraulic .
Auxiliary Relays and Trip Circuits
Auxiliary relays are used when multiple breakers need to be tripped or when the trip coil current exceeds the relay contact rating. They help close the trip coil circuit safely and prevent damage to relay contacts. The trip circuit may include station batteries, auxiliary switches, and relay contacts to energize the trip coil and operate the breaker reliably .
Instrument Transformers
Current transformers (CTs) and voltage transformers (VTs) are installed to step down high currents and voltages to measurable levels for relays. CTs are connected in series with the line, while VTs are connected in parallel. These transformers provide isolation and accurate measurement for relay operation .
Station Batteries
Station batteries provide backup power to the relay and trip circuits, ensuring that protective devices operate even during AC supply failures. They accumulate energy during normal operation and discharge when a fault occurs to trip the relevant circuit breaker .
