Fiber optic communication is a method of transmitting information by sending pulses of light through optical fibers, which act as waveguides for the light signal . Optical fibers are preferred over electrical cables for high bandwidth, long-distance transmission, and immunity to electromagnetic interference .

Structure of Optical Fibers

An optical fiber consists of three main layers :

  • Core: The innermost part made of glass or plastic, where light travels.
  • Cladding: Surrounds the core and has a lower refractive index, keeping light confined via total internal reflection.
  • Buffer Coating: A protective layer that shields the fiber from physical damage and moisture. Fibers can be single-mode (supporting one light path for long-distance communication) or multi-mode (supporting multiple paths for short-distance, high-power applications) .

Working Principle

The process begins with an electronic signal converted into light by a transmitter. The light travels through the fiber with minimal loss due to total internal reflection. At the receiving end, a photodetector converts the light back into an electrical signal . This allows data to be transmitted over long distances with high fidelity.
