How It Works
In a typical three-phase system, a ground fault generates a residual current (In), which is the vector sum of the three phase currents. The relay measures the phase current (e.g., Ia) and adds a fraction of the residual current, determined by the KZ factor, to obtain a compensated current. This compensated current is then used to calculate the apparent impedance (ZN) seen by the relay:
- ZN = KZ × Z1, where Z1 is the positive-sequence impedance to the fault . This compensation ensures that the relay measures the correct distance to the fault, accounting for system unbalance and zero-sequence effects.
