Article Overview
Fiber optic sensors are classified into intrinsic, extrinsic, hybrid, intensity-based, polarization-based, chemical, physical, and biomedical types, each designed for specific sensing applications.
Classification by Sensing Location
- Intrinsic Fiber Optic Sensors: The sensing occurs within the fiber itself. The fiber acts as the sensing element, and environmental changes such as strain, temperature, or pressure directly modulate the light traveling through it. These sensors are capable of distributed sensing over long distances and are widely used in structural health monitoring and industrial applications .
- Extrinsic Fiber Optic Sensors: The fiber primarily transmits light to and from an external transducer. The modulation occurs outside the fiber, and the fiber serves as a conduit for the optical signal. These sensors are suitable for measuring parameters like rotation, vibration, displacement, torque, and acceleration in hard-to-reach locations .
- Hybrid Sensors: Combine features of both intrinsic and extrinsic sensors, allowing the fiber to carry light into and out of the sensing device, providing flexibility in complex measurement scenarios .
Classification by Operating Principle
- Intensity-Based Sensors: Measure changes in light intensity caused by environmental effects. Examples include microbend sensors and evanescent wave sensors. They are simple, cost-effective, and can be multiplexed, but are sensitive to losses from splices or bends .
- Polarization-Based Sensors: Detect changes in the polarization state of light due to external influences. These sensors are useful for measuring strain, pressure, or other parameters that affect the fiber's optical properties .
- Phase or Wavelength-Based Sensors: Utilize changes in the phase or wavelength of light, often implemented with fiber Bragg gratings, for precise measurements of strain, temperature, or pressure .
Classification by Application
- Chemical Sensors: Convert chemical information into measurable optical signals, often used in analyzers for detecting specific chemical species .
- Physical Sensors: Measure physical properties such as temperature, pressure, or strain. They include photoelectric, piezoelectric, and piezoresistive types .
- Biomedical Sensors: Designed to detect non-electrical quantities in medical applications, converting them into optical signals for monitoring physiological parameters .
Specialized Types
- Fiber Optic Current Sensors: Measure electrical currents using the Faraday Effect, providing high accuracy and immunity to electromagnetic interference, ideal for power systems and industrial monitoring .
- Magneto-Optic Sensors: Detect magnetic fields by changes in optical properties of magnetic materials, suitable for extreme environments like aerospace or high-radiation areas . These classifications allow fiber optic sensors to be tailored for structural, industrial, chemical, biomedical, and electrical applications, offering advantages such as immunity to electromagnetic interference, remote sensing capability, and high sensitivity.
