Article Overview

A data center power distribution box (PDU or distribution cabinet) typically uses a three-phase input with circuit breakers distributing power to multiple branches, often represented in single-line or five-line diagrams.

Overview of Power Distribution

Data center power distribution starts with the utility or medium-voltage (MV) service, which is stepped down to low voltage (LV) via transformers located in the data center. The LV power is then routed through switchgear and distribution panels to supply IT racks, cooling systems, lighting, and other infrastructure loads . High-density racks may require 60A service, while standard racks often use 30A service .

Single-Line vs. Five-Line Diagrams

  • Single-line diagrams represent all three phases, neutral, and ground as a single line connecting major components like transformers, breakers, and PDUs. They are useful for high-level planning and understanding power flow .
  • Five-line diagrams show all three phases, neutral, and ground individually. These are used for detailed wiring, troubleshooting, and analyzing ground faults or circulating currents .

Typical PDU Wiring

A standard 208V, 30A Delta PDU wiring includes:

  • Input power: Three-phase lines labeled X, Y, Z, plus ground.
  • Branch distribution: Each branch uses a pair of phases (XY, YZ, ZX) with a dedicated ground.
  • Circuit protection: Two-pole breakers or fuses protect each branch to prevent overcurrent damage.
  • Outlet distribution: Equal number of outlets per branch to balance load across phases . For higher-density racks (60A), the number of branches is doubled to fully distribute the available current, ensuring no single phase is overloaded .

Modular Power Distribution Cabinets

Modern data centers often use modular precision power distribution cabinets, which allow flexible configuration for IT and non-IT loads. These cabinets can support 2N redundancy, meaning two independent power paths supply the same load for fault tolerance . Each side of the cabinet is physically separated to prevent a failure in one path from affecting the other, which is critical for Tier III and Tier IV data centers .

Key Components in a Distribution Box

  • Input breakers: Connect the PDU to the transformer or UPS output.
  • Busbars: Conduct power to multiple branch circuits.
  • Branch breakers: Protect individual circuits feeding racks or infrastructure.
  • Outlets: IEC C13/C19 or NEMA receptacles for IT equipment.
  • Monitoring: Optional meters or sensors for current, voltage, and power usage.

Summary

A data center power distribution box is designed to safely and efficiently distribute three-phase power to IT and facility loads. Wiring diagrams can be represented as single-line for overview or five-line for detailed connections, with proper circuit protection and phase balancing. Modular designs with redundancy ensure continuous operation even during maintenance or component failure .
